Flow assumptions

  • The calculator uses the entered filter water flow without a reduction or another adjustment.
  • If the entered value is an advertised or maximum rate, the result is a theoretical rated-flow ratio.
  • If the entered value is an installed-flow estimate or measurement, the result applies only to those conditions.
  • The calculator uses the entered aquarium water volume. It does not estimate displacement, sump volume, or another water volume.
  • Turnover is a flow ratio. It does not measure filtration performance or water quality.

Calculation warnings

  • Do not enter powerhead circulation or air-pump airflow as filter water flow.
  • Published filter flow can exceed installed flow. Media, debris, hoses, fittings, lift, and flow settings can reduce water flow.
  • Water can pass through a filter more than once. This ratio does not count the path of each gallon.
  • Do not use this ratio as proof of filtration performance, water quality, equipment fit, or correct installation.
