Aquarium Cleaning & Water-Change Equipment Guide: Siphons, Scrapers, Pumps and What You Actually Need

Most aquariums do not need a pile of cleaning gadgets.

A manual gravel vacuum, an algae scraper that is safe for the tank material, and a clean way to move old and new water will handle most routine maintenance. Larger tanks change the equation because carrying water becomes the annoying part. That is where longer hoses, faucet-connected water changers, and utility pumps start making sense.

Powered gravel cleaners can be useful too, but they are usually an extra tool rather than a replacement for a siphon and water changes.

These ranges are only a starting point. A 30-gallon tank across the room from a sink can justify a long-hose system sooner than a 55-gallon tank sitting next to a convenient drain.

Gravel vacuums and siphons

A basic siphon is just a hose that moves water from the aquarium to a lower container or drain. A gravel vacuum adds a larger intake tube that lets you clean the substrate while the water leaves the tank.

When the intake tube is pushed into gravel, the water flow lifts loose waste. The gravel is heavy enough to fall back while lighter debris travels down the hose.

That makes the gravel vacuum one of the few aquarium tools doing two jobs at the same time. You are removing old water and cleaning accumulated debris rather than turning aquarium cleaning into separate chores.

Fine sand needs a lighter touch. Instead of burying a large gravel tube deep into the substrate, hover the intake above the surface or disturb only the upper layer enough to lift loose waste. Planted substrates may also need more selective cleaning around plants rather than deep vacuuming through the whole tank.

A plain hose can still perform a water change, but it gives you much less control over substrate cleaning.

Manual vs powered gravel cleaners

For most aquariums, start with a manual gravel vacuum.

There is very little to go wrong. Some models start with an up-and-down movement of the intake tube, while others use a priming bulb or another starting mechanism. Once the siphon is running, gravity does the rest.

A manual vacuum also removes water while it removes debris. That matters because aquarium maintenance is not only about picking visible dirt out of the gravel.

Powered gravel cleaners solve a different problem.

Some battery or plug-in cleaners pull debris through a filter and return the filtered water to the aquarium. They can be handy for cleaning a dirty patch of substrate between normal water changes. Because the water goes back into the tank, those models do not perform the water-change part of the job.

Other powered cleaners have an adapter that lets water drain through a hose, so check how the exact model works before assuming that "powered gravel cleaner" means one thing.

For most people, a powered unit makes sense after a normal siphon, not instead of one.

There is another option that sits somewhere between the two: a faucet-connected water changer. These systems use a long hose connected to a compatible faucet so the aquarium can be drained and often refilled without carrying buckets back and forth.

On a small aquarium, that may be more equipment than you need. On a large aquarium, eliminating repeated bucket trips can change how irritating a water change feels.

Choosing the right siphon diameter

Bigger is not automatically better.

A wide hose can move water quickly, which is useful when you have a large tank and a lot of water to remove. Put the same siphon on a tiny aquarium and you may drain a large part of the tank before you have finished cleaning the substrate.

A narrower siphon slows things down. That gives you more control around small tanks, delicate layouts, fine substrate, and places where you need to work carefully.

There are also two diameters to pay attention to.

The hose diameter affects water flow. The gravel tube diameter affects how much substrate can enter the tube and how easily you can work between rocks, plants, wood, and other decor.

Product listings do not always describe these measurements the same way. If diameter matters for a fitting, pump, or replacement hose, check whether the measurement refers to the hose inside diameter, outside diameter, or the gravel tube itself.

There is no single hose diameter that every 20-gallon or 55-gallon tank should use. The right size depends on how quickly you want the tank to drain and how much control you need while vacuuming.

If the siphon empties the tank faster than you can clean it, it is too aggressive for the way you are using it.

Choosing siphon and hose length

Length causes a different set of problems.

The rigid gravel tube should be long enough to reach the substrate comfortably. Deep tanks benefit from a longer tube even when they do not need a wider one.

The drain hose needs to reach wherever the dirty water is going.

For a bucket beside the stand, a short hose is usually easier to handle. For a sink or drain across the room, measure the route the hose will actually take rather than the distance in a straight line. Leave enough slack that the hose is not being pulled tight around furniture or the aquarium.

Extra hose is not always an upgrade. Very long runs create more resistance to flow, and coils of unused hose are annoying to store and clean.

Gravity siphons also need the discharge end below the aquarium water level. A tank that sits unusually low can have weak siphon flow even when the hose itself is large.

If water has to travel uphill or over a long distance, a pump may be the better tool.

Algae scrapers

Algae scrapers range from small hand pads to long handles with replaceable blades.

The tank material matters more than the shape of the handle.

Glass can tolerate cleaning tools that should never be used on acrylic. Metal blades are particularly effective on stubborn growth on glass when the scraper is designed for that use. Acrylic needs an acrylic-safe plastic blade or pad because scratches are much easier to make and much harder to ignore afterward.

Combination scrapers can be useful when they let you swap between a soft pad and a harder blade instead of buying several handles.

Handle length mostly comes down to reach. A small scraper works well on a shallow nano tank where your hand can reach everything. On a deep aquarium, a longer handle keeps you from putting most of your arm into the water just to clean the lower front pane.

Keep hard blades away from silicone seams and inspect the cleaning edge before using it. A scraper with trapped grit can do more damage than the algae did.

Magnetic algae cleaners

A magnetic cleaner puts the scrubbing pad inside the aquarium and the handle outside. The two halves move together through the glass or acrylic.

They are excellent for routine film algae because you can clean the viewing panes without getting your hands wet.

They are less useful in tight corners and around complicated hardscape, so a magnet rarely eliminates the need for every other scraper.

Shop for a magnetic cleaner by the tank wall thickness it supports, not only by a gallon number printed on the package. Two aquariums with similar capacity can use different glass or acrylic thicknesses.

Check the pad material too. A magnet advertised for glass is not automatically safe for acrylic.

The biggest scratch risk comes from substrate getting trapped in the inside pad. Do not drag the cleaner through sand or gravel at the bottom of the tank. If the inner piece falls into the substrate, inspect and rinse the pad before putting it back against the pane.

That tiny habit can save a very permanent scratch.

Buckets, pumps and hoses

Buckets work. They just stop being pleasant once a water change means carrying them across the room repeatedly.

For small aquariums, a dedicated aquarium bucket or container is usually the cheapest solution. Do not use a bucket that also gets used for household cleaners or other chemicals.

A hose clip is a cheap addition that is more useful than it looks. It keeps the drain hose where you put it instead of letting it jump out of the bucket halfway through a siphon.

Larger aquariums make pumps more attractive.

A submersible utility pump can move replacement water from a storage container back into the aquarium. It can also help when gravity cannot move drained water where you need it to go.

Do not shop for a pump by its advertised flow rate alone. Pumps lose flow as they push water higher. Check the pump's head-height information and make sure its hose connection matches the tubing you plan to use.

A huge pump is not necessarily desirable for refilling an aquarium. Controlled flow is easier around substrate, plants, fish, and decor.

Long hoses are most useful when they remove a physical chore. If a hose lets you drain directly to a sink or refill without carrying water, it has earned the storage space. If it spends every water change tangled on the floor while you still use buckets, it has not.

Which cleaning tools are actually useful?

A manual gravel vacuum is hard to call optional for a typical gravel-bottom aquarium. It is cheap, simple, and combines substrate cleaning with water removal.

Flow valves and hose clips are similarly boring but useful. They solve actual annoyances.

Faucet-connected water changers earn their place when bucket carrying has become the worst part of maintaining the aquarium. Utility pumps make sense when water needs to travel from a storage container, across a room, or upward.

Powered gravel cleaners are more situational. They can be very good at picking visible debris out of the substrate without removing a large amount of water. If you already perform normal water changes comfortably, a powered cleaner is convenience equipment.

The same applies to powered algae scrubbers and elaborate cleaning kits. If a tool solves a problem you actually have, such as limited reach or difficulty scrubbing stubborn algae, it may be worth owning. If it adds batteries, attachments, replacement pads, and another thing to clean without saving much work, leave it on the shelf.

Aquarium maintenance equipment does not need to be clever. It needs to make the recurring job easier.

Cleaning equipment for small tanks vs large tanks

Small aquariums reward control.

An oversized siphon can pull water out so quickly that the water change is almost finished before the gravel is clean. Narrow tubing and a smaller intake give you more working time.

Small containers also make it easier to control exactly how much water has been removed. There is little reason to set up a 25-foot hose for a five-gallon tank sitting six feet from a sink.

Large tanks reverse the priorities.

Water volume becomes the tedious part. Carrying bucket after bucket usually takes more effort than scraping the glass or vacuuming the gravel.

This is where larger siphons, long drain hoses, faucet-connected changers, and transfer pumps start making sense. Deep tanks may also need longer scraper handles and longer gravel tubes.

Glass thickness can increase as tanks get larger, so magnetic algae cleaners need another check. Do not assume the magnet that worked on a smaller tank will grip properly through the wall of the next aquarium.

The best large-tank cleaning setup is often the one that minimizes carrying.
